Crazy Wed Night Out
Thursday, 27 November 2008 9:07 pm
I have a new dining place to introduce - Greenwood Fish Market Bistro.
Hidden in the private estates of Bukit Timah is actually a row of shophouses, mostly restaurants. Apparently I recalled someone telling me that the food at this small little area is pretty good. I have always known about this place, being a NJCian.
Biu kor brought me there, and yes, my biu kor can be jumpy too! (It is okay if you don't get it, because it is a private joke). First thing you see, if the fish stall. No kidding, like you go market, the fish is kept in the display fridge. Upon further inspection, there is a small and cosy dining area beyond the fish market. Not that I never warn, but the space is really small. So if you are intending to dine in large groups, it will be good, if not necessary, to make a reservation.
I had fish and chips, which is like their most famous dish, biu kor has pan-seared salmon. Fish and chips was fine, one thing to comment is that the fish is really fresh. The texture of the meat is very smooth, probably what other people describes as melts in your mouth. You can choose battered or crumbed.
The salmon was cooked to perfection. As recommended by the waiter, pan-seared is the best way of cooking it. The meat remains soft and juicy, while the skin was crisp. The salmon was much better than the fish and chips.
We also had oysters and calamari. Oooooo, I have grown to love oysters. Calamari was okay only, nothing spectacular.
Address is 34 Greedwood Ave, Tel: 64674950. Basically travel along Dunearn Road, you see the sign board that says NJC or RGPS, just turn in and go straight all the way, till you see the shophouses.
Okayyyyy, yesterday I made a crazy decision to go Zouk with biu kor and his 3 girls (LOL), after work. Things havn't been going too well for me, so decided to let loose, since my boss is away, can always go in a little later.
First, I reached there about 9.15pm and there was a freaking queue, not only for Phuture, but for Citibank card holders! So in an attempt to cut queue, msg Virn to see if she happens to be around. Turned out she was coming at like 10pm, which is our usual timing.
So we starting queueing, because biu kor no citibank card have to queue the normal one, I continued the citi queue. Then biu kor told me Phuture ladies sold out. Then there was like only abt 15 people before us in citi queue, and they say reach quota!
Wtf! THEY SHOULD BAN THOSE $500 CITI CLEAR CARD HOLDERS! (Nah, just making some noise, I used to be the $500 holder too) But seriously, isn't it abit unfair to those real credit card holders? We pay much more annual fee and interests. But I guess the whole idea is to attract those youngsters. I still manage to get into Phuture in the end anyways.
I shall stop complaining on the regular annoying things, you know, the crowd being young and blah blah.
But I must f*cking complain this f*cking fat guy wearing a yellow shirt at mambo. We were getting out of the dancefloor to get a drink from the bar. As we walked past, he PURPOSELY put out his hand so that as we walk past, he can touch our butts! I am so f*cking pissed! I turned and stared, and I wanted so much to scold him. Really damm f*-up one leh. KNN
Yesterday I was abit more fierce and dao, so I manage to stay out of trouble from guys. And I had SOOOOOOOOOO much fun! First it was a surprise to be able to see Virn and Yarn, didn't know they were coming at first. Felt like we were back at those good old times before I started working. And I met Char in the Zouk toilet! Wenz was there too! It has been AGES since I last saw them. So glad to see them again...missed them so much. Wenz is working at SPRING, and moving to fusionopolis soon, so will have more chance to meet up with her in the future.
Fun is going to begin. Back to the good old days of Phuture.
Overdued...
Friday, 21 November 2008 9:43 pm
...by one week. I had been wanting to blog about last friday, but was feeling lazy.
Met up with Almighty and Fir. Great to see them back! How time flies, it is almost a year since we got acquainted. Anyway, celebrated almighty's birthday and return with delicious crab at AMK. People, remember it is Mellben Seafood that is nice, not Uncle Leong's.
The place renovated till so nice! The last time I went was like an abandoned coffee shop, a crowded one though. But now it is like some HDB restaurant, with open-kitchen concept. Well, not exactly open, but there are glass panels where you can see the chefs cooking.
Crab bee hoon is still as delicious!!! MUST EAT MUST TRY! Remember is crab bee hoon with soup. Ah Mund almost ordered something else, and I would have murdered him, haA~. Too bad Rosy missed out the food, but nevermind, we can always go there again!
After that we wanted to go Timbre, but it was so crowded when we reached there. So we walked to CHJMES instead. Driving, so didn't have alcohol. Plus I was really not in the mood for it, probably too tired from work.
Some small issue pissed me off. So after CHJMES I went to find biu kor to run an errand for him, and has supper at the usual - C.Nai at Upper East Coast Road. Yes, I am a little crazy, my favourite hang-out is actually in the east side.
Cure for AIDS
Monday, 17 November 2008 9:34 pm
Saw this post randomly on facebook:
Rare Treatment is Reported to Cure AIDS PatientAs reported in The New York Times, AIDS was cured by transplanting blood stem cells from someone who is naturally resistant to HIV. This treatment is very high risk, because it involved the total elimination of your blood cells, meaning you will have zero immunity to fight off even the mildest pathogen that an infant can fight against on his own.
But I guess this report brings hope to realising the goal of curing AIDS.
And now scientists are working on artificially introducing the mutation that makes you resistant to HIV. Which brings me to my worry. If say Mr. A was to be successfully "mutated" such that he is resistant to HIV, he might still end up acquiring the virus, but he would not be affected, making him a carrier. And then if he was to screw around with other "un-mutated" women/men, these people are at the risk of being infected and getting AIDS.
Mr. A will seem like an innocent party, because he wouldn't know he is a carrier. So who's to blame?
Getting Arty Farty

After a long hesitation, I decided to catch Return of the V, since I already missed out the V Conference last year.
Did what I mention sounded wrong? Okay, this poster shall explain it all.
It is actually a show done by Irene Ang and Chua Enlai. I must say it was really good, very entertaining. A lot of laughter involved. Hope they will do a continuation next year, I will be looking forward to it.
But I found the ticket a little expensive for the quality I get in return. Because the venue was at Movida (St James Power Station), it was a free seating / standing show. I didn't really get to see much, maybe about 40%? (Fine, because I arrive on the dot, can't really get a good view). And I found the show a little too short. It was stated about 1hr 45mins, but turn out to be only 1hour. The duration was a little disappointing, thought they could a slightly longer show, maybe around 1.5hours.
And.... I AM SO EXCITED THAT CATS IS FINALLY COMING TO SINGAPORE next year!!! After a really looooooong wait, and missing it twice when I was in Korea twice, and didn't know about they had a performance in Malaysia....
Okay, getting naggy. But hope you got my point on how DESPERATE I am to catch CATS. So to CATS lovers out there, THE TICKET SALE IS ALREADY ON! Get you tickets now (there is a early bird discount)! And students, it is $50 for ALL CATEGORIES!
So what are you waiting for? BUY NOW! (They didn't pay me to advertise la, but I REALLY LOVE CATS!) I have already gotten mine, a good half a year in advance. I have beaten my Phantom of the Opera's record, which I got the tickets 3 months in advance.
With CATS coming, means that I get to buy my CATS cd! I have been trying to looks for the complete recording CATS cd, but it is soooo difficult to find in Singapore. All those I have seen are just selected tracks. I even asked my friend to find it when he was in UK. Yes he found it, but it was crazily expensive, and would be more worth it to order from amazon. Yes yes, procastination, didn't order in the end. But it's okay! I can get it next year! I will make sure I go early for the show and buy the booklet and cd before that.
My sister suggested going to Taipei during New Year. Cooling weather means I get to wear all my beautiful spring clothes!!!

Coming back at me

Watching the latest episode of Grey's Anatomy is like shouting back at myself. Part of the episode was about how the new Head of Trauma used pigs as human substitutes to teach the residents and interns in the event of emergency. He had about 5 pigs, anesthetized, and he used a knife and gave every pig a stab. Izzy (one of the resident) was furious about how the pigs were treated.
It is like a mirror reflecting my every day work. Recently I have started wondering if the mouse feels any pain when I cervical dislocate it. It seems to be painless - they don't make noise, they just die peacefully. But at the very moment when you do it, was there a tiny fraction of a second that they felt pain?
To think about it, these ethical issues actually put us, researchers, in a difficult position. Probably not so much in Singapore, as we don't see many extremists and people who oppose to animal testings. But the nature of our work will allow some people to judge us in a bias manner, which may become a disadvantage to us.
But still, I love my job. Sometimes the experiments can get a little mundane, but I enjoy what I am doing. Many people don't see me as a research scientist, it doesn't come across to them that I would in this field. I don't see myself as one either, but I am one.
Mouse Killer
Friday, 24 October 2008 11:10 pm
I suddenly have this thought. What if I told Xiaxue what I do to mice for a living?
Okay, I know I am bored enough to read her blog. Actually, it is quite entertaining sometimes, especially if you have a few minutes to kill. Entertaining as in a good laugh, not that it adds any value.
But anyway, main point is, apparently she just gotten new hamsters. She simply adores them. Nothing wrong with that, I used to love playing with my hamsters many years back. What if she knows what I do to my mice on an almost daily basis? Probably she will blog about how cruel we are.
Her reaction wouldn't be very much different from other people. My non-science friends say I am cruel and cannot understand why we do it. My science friends are grateful they do not have to do mouse work.
I killed a record of 300+ mice in a day. Yes, 300. I have to kill mouse every other day to isolate some tissues for study. All in the name of science. I am not complaining, because if we don't experiment on mice, it would really be difficult to make discovery and for science to advance. Humans are selfish, but this is survival of the fittest.
Being Pretty...
Thursday, 23 October 2008 10:19 pm
Sometimes it really pays off to dress up and put on make-up.
I am not gorgeous, but with the help of cosmetics and clothes, I can look pretty. It has advantages, but sometimes you really wish you didn't.
Today I was asking the price for the car. The guy offered me quite a lot of freebies. Then he said when I collect car he will throw in $100 petrol voucher. He asked me I want voucher, or would I want candlelight dinner. But before I could react, he said he was just joking.
I am just SO amused by him, totally amused. I was joking to my friend that maybe I should just throw myself at him, so that I can get the car at cost price, hahahahaA~
Recently saw some news on car accidents and I did have some thoughts. Well, it is more of a collective thing, over time you hear about very upsetting car accidents. (*I really do not need lecturing from anyone for what I am going to say*) Thinking of the way I drive, I think I should do some reflections. When I have passengers, I do try to drive slower and more safely. But when I drive alone, I tend to drive a little more aggressive. And I get more aggressive as I get more comfortable with my car. I can't help it, my right foot is just a little heavier.
Despite knowing it is dangerous, I just can't help it. Young and hot headed.
Vagina Monologues
Saturday, 11 October 2008 10:03 pm
We had a great dim sum lunch at Harbourcity Restaurant (PSA Building) today. The dim sum are not the "wow" kind of quality, but definitely worth eating if you are looking for some decent food. Not only the dim sums were good, the fried fish in soya sauce and the sambal kang kong were very good too.
After lunch, we went to catch Vagina Monologues today. FANTASTIC! Highly recommended! If you have the time, do try to catch it, think it is going to end soon.
This play talks about the "V". It is not all funny stuffs, they did cover some serious topics like genital mutilation, domestic violence. The highlight of the show was probably the different types of moans. BOTH men and women should watch this show, I bet you will love it.
Talking about this, one of our mouse was actually a hermaphrodite. In layman terms, it has both reproductive organs of both the male and female. In case you wonder, it happens to humans too, but the probability is really low.
So our poor "shim" mouse's "he" organ is constantly touching the "she" organ, and therefore the mouse seems to be in a constant excited state. I am not joking, because it keeps secreting the "he" liquid. Anyway, we culled the mouse, because there is nothing we can do to it.
Yesterday was the last day of attachment for the poly students in our lab. These girls are so sweet! *Muack* My student even cried when she left! *Awwww* My colleague then commented "小妹妹就是小妹妹,很容易就被感动。", which I kind of agree. Being young, you are easy touched by a lot of things. But as we grow older, we seems to be numbed.
Well, I had a great time with them around. I think Monday will feel kind of different without them around. But anyway, TAKE CARE GIRLS!
Car Shopping
Friday, 3 October 2008 7:43 pm
Seeing how my friends enjoyed the F1 volunteering job, made me so regret pulling out from it. I think it was definitely worth taking a day leave from work. Well, there is always next year. If I am feeling rich, I might buy the ticket ^_^.
I really need to be more decisive when it comes to car shopping. My mind has been so fickled that I kept opening up to more options, which makes the situation worse. But I think I have more or less (hopefully) settled on 2 designs. Let's just hope I don't change my mind again.
Actually, I am just being very anal about 2 things. No. 1, it must be japanese car. No. 2, it must have a butt. With these 2 criteria and a budget, there isn't many choices actually. But well...
I am very desperate to get a car asap. My reason may sound lame, but... I TOTALLY CANNOT STAND PUBLIC TRANSPORT ANYMORE! Some passengers really get on my nerves (most of the time). But one thing I am sure of, is... I am not trying to impress anyone.
Which brings me to another thing that annoyed me. Someone implied that girls are impressed by guys with cars aka Ah Sia Kia. I feel insulted by this thought, and I think guys with or without cars should feel insulted too.
No doubt women may like Ah Sia Kias, but it is not everything. Like and having to want one are different things. AND the MOST important thing is, the driver. If you are kns, no matter what car you drive, be it Lambo or even the Prancing Horse, you are still kns, you still will not be able to impress. But if you are good, even if you don't drive, even if you take a MRT, you can impress everyone around you.
Lastly, road etiquttes. I may not be the best person to mention this, as I can be quite a devil on the road (trapping taxi is one of my favourite thing to do). But if you are SLOW, move to the side, why do you want to insist on blocking other people's path, and then later complain how impatient that driver is and why he/she must overtake. "The car in front is for you to overtake", hahahahaA~. Okay, that was a joke.
