The word "If"

How many times have you found yourself or other people using the word "if"?
"If I had done this...", "If only I knew...", "If we had gone there...", "If you had gave that...".
I think this is very familiar to everyone. I pondered about this before.
Most of the time, we are not aware of the other option(s), or we do not know the consequences of the options we have.
So why did we make the choice that we had made? Probably this is fate. People say we can control our own fate, of course, because we make our own decisions. But then again, why or what influenced you to make the choice?
Complicated isn't it? Well, I guess there is really no point in thinking of the "what ifs". Since we have already made the decision, shouldn't we just look and move forward, hoping that every decision we make will be correct?
