Today I went to Marina Square to work at Xperiment '07.
Xperiment is basically an event organised by A*STAR and Science Centre, promoting science. So our school had a booth there. We didn't do much, just gave out some brochures containing information of our courses.
The people from School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences actually put up some experiments. There is this superconductor levitation experiment that was the highlight, and it even appeared of Straits Times.

If you can recall, we learnt a little bit on superconductor in secondary school physics. Because it was just a small little section, I never really paid attention to it. But it is actually quite interesting, after seeing the demonstration.
Superconductors have zero electrical resistance, and they are some sort of special ceramics. The most important thing to know is that when it is very very cold (-180 degree celcius), it generates a magnetic field when placed near magnet. This follows Lenz's law. So it will levitate, even when the magnet track is being turned upside down.
This magnetic property is only present when it is cold. So as it gains heat from the environment, it will lose the property, and cannot levitate anymore.
Then there was this science cum magic show, done by this doctorate from United States.

He is very engaging, and his magic tricks are just amazing. We were trying to figure out how he did some of the tricks, but we never really figured it out.
There was also some quiz that you can answer and get a pair of tickets. I wanted so much to get the tickets, but I am not shameless enough to fight with the kids, haA~. I even help one kid with answering the question!

Look how much these kids are enjoying themselves.
Across our booth happened to be the IMCB booth. They displayed zebrafish. At first I didn't notice the fish, I just saw the chart for the growth process. Like every other model organism, their development from the embryo is the same. I thought it was C.elegans, then I asked the person. He was like "no lah! This is zebrafish!". I think I just threw NTU's face, haA~.
Having studied developmental biology on zebrafish, have you ever seen one?

They also have the 6-well dish containing the fish at different development stages. It is interesting, because we never ever get to see them when we were studying on it.
Then the people were like psycho-ing me to go to IMCB after I graduate. Another one was like "why come to IMCB?", haA~, contradicting themselves.
But actually, it is sort of fun to work with zebrafish. Everyday you go to work and see your "pets". Well, to add fun, you can name them as well, heE~.
Anyway, the guy in the picture is pretty cute, as in he looks very mature and dependable. Oh crap, I was man-gazing today again, haA~.
