I think I sort of pissed my SU president today. Well, there was a meeting today for all the projects chairperson, but most of us didn't know the agenda of the meeting.
The meeting was about X bank's (there is only one bank in NTU, so don't ask me) sponsorship to SU. Well, apparently, someone (don't know is this batch or the previous) promised 5000 sign ups for the NTU-X bank debit card. It would have been a much easier task if it was UOB Campus card. However, the terms and condition of the X bank's debit card is terrible, resulting in alot of people don't want to sign up for the card. Even my friends and I were tempted to sign for the card, until we say the terms.
So, obviously we didn't hit the target despite the numerous road shows. And if we don't hit the target, we only get certain % of full sum. In order to hit the target, the project cell is being pushed (hmm, I think I prefer the word force) to get the sign ups (because the project cell need the most amount of money for events). So the president asked us how many sign ups do we think we can get. To entertain him, everyone said a certain figure. As for me and convocation ball (the SIC), we don't need the money from X bank, and so the committee members will not be motivated to do something they don't need to.
Then until our turn to give. Convocation ball say (honestly) they cannot project any sign up, due to the above reason. So I commented that now the problem don't lie with us, it lies with the card's condition. It is so unattractive that most people will not want it. I told him that well, the most we can control is making sure everying in SU sign up for the card, but the other students, we can only promote and not force them to sign if they don't want. I even told him that my friends and I didn't sign for th card due to the conditions. Unless something was done to make it more attractive, we will not be able to project much sign ups.
Apparently, he was disappointed with the figures given (and perhaps partly by what I said), he sort of lost his cool and started to shout for the ex-co to meet outside, leaving the rest of us inside. We were quite shocked by his reaction. Firstly, he should have expected this kind of answer. Secondly, he is the president, he shouldn't lose it in front of all of us. Many of us were not very happy about this issue.
In the end, we manage to sort it out within our own project cell. I think I have step on his tail. I forsee I might have some arguments with the exco (which I sincerely hope it will not happen). But thinking about what happen last time during Union Day, I might. They just like to interfere with things that our own committee had planned. I certainly do not wish I have to shout at them before the other students/VIPs. We must exercise control, and not being always lead by the nose and abide by whatever they say.
